Build a PC: $40,000USD limit.

Might as well make my first post as useless but as interesting as a first post could ever be.

Lets see. Before i start writing, I can read PalmerTech's mind. he has seen me, he sees this coming, Now attack palmer! attack!
(lol, Please don't :gonk: )

Ok now we start.

-----------------------

Ok people. If you could build a Super-Computer of your choice, any part you want, any OS, etc. What would you build it with? Im giving a price limit of, lets say $40,000USD.

Surely you can build a super-high performance PC for $40,000USD?

Now. You can deck it however you want.

The only requirements, It needs the tower (with motherboard, cpu, disc drive, hard drive, graphics card, power supply, case), a screen, keyboard and a mouse AT THE MINIMUM.

We are going to assume that all the cables and screws needed come with the pieces and that the cpu comes with a basic heatsink. You can of course buy a new fan if you want to.

You can have as much as you want on the PC. But the 40K is to build the PC, ignoring all outside payments that are needed (like car, mortgage, etc)

Simple, When posting, Give us links to the pieces, And if you wish, post some pictures in your post!

Have fun!

I think only Jleemero has the ability to even build a $40,000 PC, let alone comprehend it. I think you're asking the wrong forum to do this for you.

(Psst, get a 1TB SDD)

I was seeing who could come up with the best idea.

Its not ever going to be built (I don't think I have the money for it currently, at least not for a PC)

Im looking to see the best hardware combination's, best cooling ideas (like ive seen someone cool a PC with oil, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb4UumU6 ... re=related )

This is just so you can see what you would probably build if something like this would happen to you.

Like on another forum, Ive seen a motherboard which has 2 LGA-1366 slots, that the idea was to mount it with 2 i7 980X (yes, 2 Gulftown's :O ). Along with 3 GeForce 480X's, 24Gb of RAM, etc.

Yeah, This is probably the wrong forum, Someone will post something interesting though, unlike doing it on a Mac-related forum (the majority of the posts was about buying 2x 12-core Mac-pro's or wondering about how the oil-cooled PC would work... )

P.S. I Think a 1TB SSD would be $20,000 by itself :neutral2:

Not a hard drive ;)

Besides, SSDs run so much better then any hard drive.

Well, If you had 40K to spend on a PC, and you wanted space, You wouldn't go past atleast 1 SSD.

Yeah, Im going to have to spend some money on an upgrade to my hard drive for my MacBook Pro... Maybe a 250GB SSD will happen (if i go for a 128GB SSD, Its more like a downgrade, not an upgrade)

I'd rather spend the money on a Lotus Elise, but if it's an insane PC build you want, it's an insane PC build you'll get! :p

(Another 2 grand to the total budget and you could build two of them.)

For your effort you get 12 physical CPU cores (or 24 hyperthreaded CPU cores), 96 gigs of RAM, and about 3 TB of SSD storage since you lose one in RAID 5. You could offload all your browser cache and temporary files to a RAM disk, further speeding things up.

OR you could go with something like this and get a crapton of GPU processing:

ASUS P6T7 WS Motherboard - $400

TOTAL: $17,135

Less CPU than the other one, but imagine the kind of folding this thing could do.

In both cases I'd swap out the 1 TB SSDs with 1 TB WD hard drives and save more than 11 grand off the build prices.

It seems like a Heck of a deal after everything is added up. That said, I do have some things I should point out:
-All prices are rounded. I am a moron and mixed up Canadian and American dollars as well. Everything from NCIX is Canadian dollars, everything else is American dollars.
-One CPU costs more than my computer.
-I know, 24" monitors are lame. There was originally only one, as well. I just don't really like huge displays. Imagine there's a really long HDMI cable in that cable budget, though.
-I would need a new desk, as neither the monitors nor the massive case would fit in/on/under mine.
-I seriously doubt that PSU could power this box. You would need at least two of them. However, we can try, and see how much smoke pours out from it.
-The motherboard alone requires two EPS12V connectors and three 6-pin PCI-e connectors. There are also only a handful of cases that it will fit in.
-This thing would get hot. Insanely hot, despite the watercooling and massive amount of fans. And to think I was originally going to rely on air cooling.
-I probably should have made the "I *Can'tSayThisOnTV*ed up a $1000 part" budget higher. Because I will probably break both CPUs putting them in, or maybe when installing the waterblocks.
-It needs some lighting, but it would probably just blow the PSU. Maybe connect it to an external wall wart?
-I originally considered a 1600W power supply that required a 20 amp outlet. I decided to go with the Corsair one instead because of its single rail design and better brand name. Whether a single rail is really better or not above a kilowatt is debatable.
-This rig is more powerful than either of bic's boxes, but only has half the RAM of the first one and lacks a massive SSD array. bic's rigs probably won't explode when you turn them on, either.

@bic, @XCVG Thats what I'm talkin' about!

In the top 3. (there has been only 3 that hasn't been Mac Pro's over about 4 forums :neutral2: )

Assuming you could build this kind of machine...

WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH ALL THAT POWER?

Well, aside from *maybe* running Crysis at max settings. ;P

Just tape on a lcd screen, some random keys, a 1 gb flash drive, a cd, mayyyybe some random chip s and such,

i mean, whats a better way to spend money?

i realized my first image was a toy car XD

I wonder if I can get my really rich millionaire uncle to get me a 1TB SSD for my 15th birthday next year. Make you guys jealous :p

Correction: You almost had it right.

1.) Buy DeLorean
2.) Yank wimpy engine
3.) Install EcoBoost or new Ford 5.0 drivetrain
4.) Put a good gaming PC inside it

Seriously guys the DeLorean's stock engine is anemic at best (170 HP overseas, 130 HP in the US thanks to emissions regulation), and the 2,700lb weight of that awesome stainless steel body isn't helping. (0-60 time? Nearly 10 seconds.)

I want a carbon fiber DeLorean now. :(
